Cataract Surgery

Cataracts can have a significant effect on a person’s quality of life. As vision becomes increasingly cloudy and begins to affect everyday routine, patients should discuss surgery options with a University Eye Specialists ophthalmologist. Cataract surgery is a procedure in which the surgeon removes the eye’s clouded natural lens and replaces it with an intraocular lens. The procedure itself takes roughly thirty minutes, with patients experiencing little to no pain. Usually, patients are able to return to their normal activities within a few days.

During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision at the cornea and inserts an instrument to break up and remove the cloudy lens. Once the natural lens is removed, the implant is inserted and set into a permanent position. Because of the size and location of the incision, stitches are rarely needed, and the eye heals rapidly.
